David wrote, “Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11
Why is it so important to have the Word of God in your heart? Because you need it to fight against temptations. God’s word is powerful. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. (Hebrews 4:12) With it you can defeat the devil and all temptations of the flesh, if used properly.
When I was in the U.S. Army, we were taught to “train as you fight”. That meant however you fight during training, that’s how you will fight on the battlefield. There is no time to recall how the training manual said to do it. If you trained poorly, you will fight poorly and lose. On the other hand, if you trained properly, you will fight well and win.
When Jesus was tempted by the Devil, he quoted scriptures to overcome those temptations. How much more so should be use the scriptures to overcome temptation or the Devil! That means we need to, just as David did, have the Word of God in our heart. We’ve got to read the Bible regularly to stand firm in our faith. We’ve got to memorize scriptures so we are always ready to us the Sword of the Spirit, and we’ve got to have a relationship with the Lord to walk in his power in the Spirit.
Listen to this week’s podcast on the Sword of the Spirit, and prepare to win the battle.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, my friends.
